Al Gore (2007)
The Gore Effect is named after Al Gore ironic name for untimely snow weather or cold spells in relation to events and demonstrations on the risks of global warming. The alleged effect spread to a suitable single-event 2004 in the style of a modern legend. Listen to events from around the world were in the U.S. informal Websites und Blogs beschrieben und mitunter auch als politisches Kampfmittel benutzt. 2007 wurde der Begriff ins Urban dictionary aufgenommen. Seit 2008 taucht der Begriff vermehrt in der amerikanischen Öffentlichkeit, so in überregionalen Tageszeitungen und politischen Magazinen auf und wird etwa im Zusammenhang mit dem Kälteeinbruch zum Ende der UN-Klimakonferenz in Kopenhagen angeführt.
Insbesondere dem ehemaligen US-Präsidentschaftskandidaten Al Gore wird dabei in spöttischer Weise nachgesagt, seine Vorträge und Aktivitäten fielen regelmäßig mit entsprechenden Wetterereignissen zusammen oder er löse diese sogar aus.[1] Der Gore-Effekt wird dabei ähnlich wie die Moderne Sage über eine vorgebliche Aussage Gore used that he had personally invented the internet. * Ein Besuch von Al Gore in Australien im Juli 2009 bzw. 2006[6] anlässlich der Aktion Safe Climate Australia in Melbourne war mit einem plötzlichen Kälteeinbruch und starken Schneefällen verbunden.[12]
* Eine im März 2009 angesetzte Großdemonstration in Washington gegen die globale Erwärmung fiel mit für die Jahreszeit sehr seltenem Schneefall und dadurch bedingten Verkehrsproblemen zusammen. Die als Rednerin vorgesehene führende demokratische Politikerin Nancy Pelosi musste aufgrund einer Flugverspätung ihre Teilnahme absagen.[6]
* Bereits zum Ende der UN-Klimakonferenz in Kopenhagen 2009 drohte in den USA ein Wintereinbruch und eine turbulente Wetterlage über dem Nordatlantik, in Europa kam dieser etwas später an. Die US-Senatsdelegation wie Präsident Obama selbst reisten nach einer improvisierten Pressekonferenz zu einem angeblichen Durchbruch bei der Konferenz vorzeitig ab. Bei der Ankunft Obamas in den USA kam es zu wetterbedingten Behinderungen, unter anderem musste er aufgrund eines extremen Schneesturms auf den sonst üblichen Transfer per Hubschrauber verzichten.[6][13][14]
* Ein im Dezember 2009 stattgefundenes CNN-Interview mit Gore zur Konferenz in Kopenhagen und den Gefahren der globalen Erwärmung wurde vom konservativen Newsbuster Portal mit dem nachfolgenden Wetterbericht über den Monsterschneesturm in mehreren US-Staaten kontrastiert.[15]
* Eine Scream-In Protestaktion gegen das Scheitern der Konferenz in Kopenhagen an der University of Utah im Dezember 2009 hatte aufgrund des lokalen Schneesturms nur wenig Zulauf. Die Veranstalterin bestätigte die Ironie der Situation und erwähnte, dass es ihr im vergangenen Jahr in Washington nicht besser ergangen sei, hält aber an der Fortsetzung der Proteste fest.[16]
